State of Hawai‘i Department of Education (HIDOE)

University of Hawai‘i-Mānoa

  • School Virtually provides information, lessons, step-by-step planning and more for educators and parents as schools have made a quick switch to distance and online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The website goes beyond lists of resources by offering tips on designing online instruction, utilizing technology tools and supporting students with disabilities and language learners.
  • ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i Initiative, free non-credit Hawaiian language classes online.
  • ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, ‘Imiloa@Home. The program includes keiki friendly craft projects like creating a Nā Pō Mahina or Hawaiian moon calendar and building a Pulelehua Kamehameha Butterfly life cycle carousel. ʻImiloa staff have also posted mini-presentations about Hawaiʻi’s constellations.

Bishop Museum

The Bishop Museum Online Learning Center features photos, video, blog posts, podcasts, activities, and lesson plans on various subjects including culture, science, and history to keep learners connected on and off-site.

Hawai‘i State Archives

Hawai‘i State Archives staff have uploaded numerous finding aids for your perusal, digitized materials and online exhibitions that you can access free of charge as follows:

  • Archives Research: Tips about doing research at the Archives, including finding aids that you can download.
  • Digital Collections: Indexes and digitized records from the State Archives.
  • Online Exhibitions: From high resolution images and documents that you can download to summaries of historical events and notable people.

Hawaiian Mission Houses

Connecting with History from Home: Hawaiian Mission Houses is adding daily ways to learn and have fun with Hawai‘i history on their website.

Honolulu Museum of Art

A suite of free teacher resources to download and use in classrooms.

Kona Historical Society

Kona Historical Society Digital Resources includes online content on stories of Kona, virtual exhibits, and online videos. Ideal for upper elementary, good for all ages.

Writing With Aunty Laurel

Laurel Nakanishi: Online Education: This interactive video series features poetry writing lessons, prompts, and art projects to get children (Grades 3-5) writing from home. Join our Artistic Teaching Partner, poet Laurel Nakanishi, as she guides you through poetry writing and making a craft for each poem. She has also compiled a Creative Writing Library. Ideal for grades 3-5, and anyone is invited to participate.

Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC)

PIC for Educators: Multimedia teaching aids and lesson plans for bringing Pacific Islander culture into the classroom. Organized by grade levels 6 – 8, 9 – 10, and 11 – 12.

State of Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR)

Professional Development

Professional Development classes on the fine arts and arts integration are offered several times a year for classroom teachers. State of Hawaiʻi Department of Education (DOE) teachers can sign up to receive Professional Development and Educational Research Institute (PDERI) credit for these classes. The goal is to help teachers gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to teach standards-based fine arts in their own classrooms.

Past classes have included:

  • Strategies for Engaging and Motivating Students: An Arts Toolbox
  • Integrating Visual Art into Science: Collage Murals for the Classroom
  • Writing Without Pencils – Deep Writing Skills for the Youngest Students
  • Naturally Dramatic: Developing Creative Expression and Scientific Inquiry
  • Exploring Literature through Creative Movement
  • Integrating Social Studies and Music Standards Using Percussion

Additional Information

DOE teachers should check the DOE PDERI website for current classes.

The classes are coordinated by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth with funding from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In addition to classes, the ARTS FIRST Partners sponsor Summer Institutes in June – one on Maui, and one on Oahu – four full days of arts learning for classroom teachers!
