In July 2017, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts convened an Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) for selected works from the 2017 Honolulu Biennial, including approval of studio visits to selected artists with work in the Biennial.

The role of the AASC is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the purchase of works of art, including the review, nomination, evaluation and selection of the recommended artworks for acquisition. The AASC is generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.
