The SFCA’s fifth Arts Chat event was held at the Donkey Mill Art Center (DMAC) in Holualoa (Kona side of Hawai`i Island) on July 19, 2017. The session was immediately followed by a site visit for SFCA Board Commissioners and staff members, a Strategic Planning listening session run by the Pacific Policy Research Center (PPRC) for attendees and the SFCA general board meeting.

The Arts Chat program convenes artists, arts organizations and people who care about the arts to explore collaborative ways that we can work together to promote, preserve and perpetuate the arts in our community. Commissioner Warner led the discussion on the successes and challenges faced by Hawai`i Island artists and arts organizations.

The purpose of the Strategic Planning listening session was to collect broad, public input on how the SFCA should prioritize its time, efforts and resources to help arts and culture flourish in Hawai`i in its 2019-2023 strategic plan. Participants were asked to give input on the kinds of programs, services, resources and opportunities they would like to see the SFCA provide in their community, and across the state.

The SFCA Board held their General Meeting in the afternoon. The meeting included presentations from Hawai`i Island arts organizations (East Hawaii Cultural Council, Hawaii Concert Society, Kahilu Theatre Foundation, Kona Choral Society, and the Kona Historical Society), Artists in the Schools Grants Panel Recommendations for School Year 2017-2018, Biennium Grants Panel Recommendations for Fiscal Year 2018-2019, purchase/gift recommendations for the Art in Public Places Collection, exhibit recommendations for Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits, Art Advisory Committee Member Recommendations (Filipino Veterans of WWII Memorial), and Artist Recommendations (Kea`au Elementary School, Princess Nahienaena Elementary School, Waimea Canyon Middle School).

Next SFCA board meeting: Wednesday September 20, 2017, 9:00 a.m. (please note that date and time are subject to change; the most current information will be posted to the State of Hawai‘i Calendar of Events)
