About the Art Bento Program

The Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) is proud to offer the Art Bento Program at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum (HiSAM), a museum education program of the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. Arts education is a top priority in the SFCA Strategic Plan: “To strengthen arts education Pre-K through 12 and plan for lifelong learning.”

The Art Bento Program @ HiSAM is a four-part standards-based museum education program developed for State of Hawaiʻi Department of Eduation (DOE) Oʻahu second through sixth grade students and their teachers. This unique educational experience emphasizes fine arts literacy and is led by qualified teaching artists from the SFCA’s Artistic Teaching Partners (ATP) roster. The theme, “Responding to Art,” is supported by an introductory professional development session for teachers. The program continues in the classroom with the Teaching Artist leading a pre-visit lesson. Next, during the museum visit, students experience an inquiry-based guided tour in the HiSAM galleries, engage in an artmaking lesson with their Teaching Artist, and explore art concepts through hands-on activities in the “I Love Art Gallery.” During the post-visit in the classroom, students review concepts and vocabulary as they reflect on the museum experience. Each segment actively engages students and teachers through inquiry-based activities connected to current arts standards and ELA Common Core Standards.

There is no cost to schools to participate in the program. In addition, the program also provides funds for bus transportation to the museum.
