The Hawaiʻi State Art Museum is one of venues for the 2019 Honolulu Biennial art event and will have temporary installations by Bernice Akamine, Abraham Cruzvillegas, ʻImaikalani Kalahele, Janet Lilo, and the Mata Aho Collective. For more information: www.honolulubiennial.org
First Friday: Art + Music + Fashion
Friday 3/01 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Second floor, indoor Sculpture Lobby:performances by Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony alumni. All galleries open, including the 56th Annual Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibit, featuring award-winning artwork by Hawaiʻi students grades 7 – 12.
Sculpture Garden (outdoor): Project X: fashion show collaboration with RYP Designs, artist Satoru Abe, and singer/songwriter Tim Rose.
HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop x MORI: screenprinting demonstration by April Sham, live painting by Deb Haugen, musical guests Clear & Brett, Bound, and DJ JohnJohn, plus pop-up shops.
Saturday 3/09, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Paper weaving with the Hawaiʻi Handweavers’ Hui, drop in at any time between 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., allowing at least 30 minutes to complete a project. Activity takes place in the ground floor Multipurpose Room. All museum galleries will be open on the second floor.
Pau Hana Artist Talk
Wednesday 3/27, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Jamie Allen & Licia McDonald. Presentations in second floor museum galleries followed by a reception on the ground floor hosted by the HiSAM Gallery Museum Shop x MORI.

Friday 4/05, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. First Friday: A collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial and the HiSAM Gallery Museum Shop x MORI. Slow Art Day tour with museum guide and artist Emily McIlroy, 6:00 – 6:45 p.m. (meet at the second floor visitor’s desk). Project X collaboration (fashion designer, artist, and musician) to be announced, with fashion show at 7:00 p.m. in the outdoor Sculpture Garden. Live art demonstration by Gaye Chan on the ground floor. HiSAM Gallery Museum Shop x MORI opening reception for new display of artworks by the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa’s glass department in collaboration with Japanese glass artists.
The Hawaiʻi State Legislature’s annual Art at the Capitol event will be taking place at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Slow Art Day
Saturday 4/06, 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. Spend more time looking at just a few works of art in this tour with museum guide and artist Emily McIlroy. Meet at the second floor visitors desk. About First Friday
The first Friday of each month, the museum is open late (6:00 – 9:00 pm) with live entertainment. Take the stairs or the elevators to the second floor. The shop (HiSAM Gallery Shop x MORI), cafe (Artizen by MW) and the non-profit volunteer group Friends of the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum also host First Friday events, with art sales, a bar, and special menus. About Second Saturday
The second Saturday of each month, hands-on art activities for all ages in the ground floor Multipurpose Room, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. All materials are provided, drop in at any time during activity hours, allowing at least 30 minutes to complete a project.
About Art Lunch
The last Tuesday of each month, a presentation or lecture by an artist or arts professional, 12:00 – 1:00 pm. Bring your own lunch to eat during the presentation, or buy one from the museum cafe. Ground floor Multipurpose Room.
About Pau Hana Artist Talks
A new event series introduced in 2018, these weekday evening events include presentations by artists followed by a casual reception on the ground floor. Scheduling varies; please check the event calendar for upcoming Pau Hana events.
