About this Call for Artists

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts’ Art in Public Places Program has a call for artists, requesting submissions for artwork inspired by or created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of the pandemic on life in Hawaiʻi. Artworks will be considered by a committee for the Art in Public Places Collection, which is displayed in sites across the state of Hawaiʻi, including the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum in Honolulu.
The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) is Hawaiʻi’s state government arts agency.
Deadline
Submissions close Thursday December 31, 2020 8:59 p.m. Hawaiʻi Standard Time (HST).

Submission includes:
- Resumé.
- Up to five artworks and a total of five images.
- Artist’s statement for each work of art.
- Price for each artwork.
There is no entry fee.
Selection Criteria
Residency
This call is for Hawaiʻi residents.
Quality
• Is the work’s aesthetic worth high enough to warrant acquisition?
• Has sufficient attention to craftsmanship been given?
• Is the work an original and outstanding example of its chosen medium?
• How does the work compare to other works of art by the same artist or other objects of its kind?
• How does the work compare to the general level of other works in the collection?
Style and Nature
• Is the work appropriate in scale, material, form and content for display in a variety of public spaces?
Significance
• Does the work of art fill a need or a gap in the SFCA’s collection?
• Does the work of art enhance the existing representation of similar or related work(s) in the SFCA’s collection?
• If the artist is adequately represented in the SFCA’s collection, does the work of art being considered represent a significant change in direction or technique?
Permanence
• Is the work of art structurally and externally sound? What is the physical condition?
• Does the work of art present any specific or unusual problems in terms of its care, security, and presentation?
Price
• Is the price in accordance with the current market?
Other Concerns
• Can the proper care be given to the object in the SFCA’s collection?
• Will the object be used in the foreseeable future, and is there a good faith intention to keep it in the collection for the foreseeable future?
• What are the conservation requirements for the work of art?
• What are the storage requirements for the work of art?
• Are there problems of intrinsic characteristics within the work of art that will be problematic for the SFCA’s collection?
• Is it consistent with the goals of the SFCA’s Art in Public Places Program?
Selection Process
Applicants will be screened for compliance with the selection criteria to establish a pool of qualified artworks to be considered. This pool of artworks will be presented to various Art Advisory Committees (AAC), who will recommend artworks for purchase. Final approval will be done by the SFCA Board of Commissioners. (Update February 10, 2021: presentation of a selection of artworks for consideration by the Board is scheduled for the May 19, 2021 Board meeting.)
Acquisition Process
Artists whose work is selected for purchase are required to have a State of Hawaiʻi General Excise Tax License and an HCE Certificate of Vendor Compliance. Be sure that your name or business name is the same on all official documents.
