Two exhibits at Capitol Modern (Hawaiʻi State Art Museum) close at the end of January and one closes in February. A new exhibit will open in February. Photo: museum visitors in the “Fear of the Unknown” exhibit during a First Friday evening event.

Fear of the Unknown

Visitors are invited to contemplate 34 artworks by 28 artists in the ʻEwa gallery (second floor). Take a closer look and find details that help reveal narratives of exploration, change, and discovery. Some artworks are recent additions to the collection, on display to the public for the first time.

Creatures and Characters

This exhibit is intended for all ages, with a special focus on students in the museum’s Art Bento program for Hawaiʻi public and charter elementary schools. Capitol Modern is a learning laboratory for thousands of elementary school students every year in the Art Bento program, using artworks to practice observation, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Accession: recent additions to the Art in Public Places Collection

A selection of recent additions to the collection offer an insight into current trends and themes in the local arts scene and provide an opportunity to see the diversity of works being created in Hawaiʻi today.

2024 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards

This annual exhibit features award-winning artworks by Hawaiʻi students grades 7-12. Exhibit dates: February 24 – March 23, 2024.
