In this Art in Conversation, artist Lawrence Seward discusses how narrative figures in his art practice and his work for Hawai’i Triennial 2022, “Seaward Sun” (2021), newspaper and mixed-media. Presented by Hawai‘i Contemporary in partnership with Hawai‘i State Art Museum. Kindly sponsored by Engaging the Senses Foundation. Recorded March 19, 2022 at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum.
Photographer and Hawai‘i Triennial 2022 (HT22) artist Ed Greevy talks about his work with journalist Noe Tanigawa. They discuss his collaborations with the late Haunani-Kay Trask, who was a prominent voice in environmental and social justice movements in Hawai‘i. Greevy and Trask worked together for decades, documenting and shaping a narrative of resistance that was published in the book Kū‘ē: Thirty Years of Land Struggles in Hawai‘i in 2004—selections from which appear in HT22 and are on view at Hawai‘i State Art Museum, now through Dec. 3, 2022. Recorded July 16, 2022 at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum.
Rosanna Raymond, Feeonaa Clifton and Suzanne Tamaki, members of the Aotearoa-based art collective Pacific Sisters, discuss their work for Hawai‘i Triennial 2022, “Te Pu o Te Wheke,” creating Niu Aitu, and exploring what Mana Atua/Mana Akua means to them as Tagata Moana, as a wider expression of Mana Wahine. Presented by Hawai‘i Contemporary in partnership with Hawai‘i State Art Museum. Kindly sponsored by Engaging the Senses Foundation with additional support from Creative New Zealand, East-West Center, and Hawaiian Airlines. Recorded August 20, 2022 at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum.
Hawai’i-based filmmakers Justyn Ah Chong, ‘Āina Paikai, and Sancia Miala Shiba Nash engage in conversation with poet, filmmaker, and producer Richard Hamasaki about their respective filmmaking practices and collaborations for Hawaiʻi Triennial 2022, including kekahi wahi film collective, Nā Maka o ka ʻĀina, and “Down on the Sidewalk in Waikīkī,” a short film inspired by the work of Kanaka Maoli poet Wayne Kaumualii Westlake (1947–84).
