Come and make your mark on a community mural! Artist Solomon Enos will be in the POD (Passion on Display) gallery on the ground floor of Capitol Modern Monday – Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. working on the murals that will become a large-scale artwork at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol. Enos will also be at the September 20 Friday Night Tempo event, 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. The public is invited to add a dot of paint to the mural, “like a drop of water to an ocean”, according to the artist.
School groups are encouraged to participate and can contact Shirley Lam, Museum Education Coordinator, at [email protected] to schedule a visit.
About the State Capitol Pools project
The State Capitol Pools Art Advisory Committee was formed in July 2023 at the request of the Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS) which is charged with the maintenance of the Hawaiʻi State Capitol building. Increased water damage and maintenance costs to the building have occurred over the years causing the DAGS Public Works Division to seek a creative waterless solution that would keep the integrity of the historic architectural character.
The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) successfully addressed a similar issue in its sculpture garden glass pool treatment at the No.1 Capitol District Building, which houses Capitol Modern (the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum) and several state government offices. Previously an Army-Navy YMCA, the building included a swimming pool and bleachers. When the building was acquired by the state (following renovations by developer Chris Hemmeter), the historic pool and bleachers were preserved and transformed with artworks by Doug Young and Carol Bennett. Young’s “Waikui” enamel on laminated glass sculpture references a place where fresh water meets the ocean, and Bennett’s “Trigger Picasso Energy” fused glass sculpture provides a colorful canopy.
The State Capitol Pools project is a multi-phase project that will be managed by SFCA with completion by Fall of 2026.
