About the mini-concert
Come join Jessica Ackerley, Floteson, Max High, Jonny Lam, and Illnomadic (Navid Najafi) as they celebrate the latest Lōʻihi Records release, “Broken Cassette, Volume 1” in the amphitheater at Capitol Modern!
The album’s tracks were all composed over the same drone, created using a handful of analog synthesizer modules and recorded on a four-track cassette recorder (the album also features compositions by T.J. Keanu Tario and Gahlord Dewald).
None of the artists involved heard each other’s work during the course of production, so the resulting record was a surprise to everyone involved. A bit like variations on a theme, a bit like exquisite corpse.
For this special live concert, the artists will improvise over that original drone, both individually and in spontaneously formed ensembles. The music will be accompanied by the premiere of “Holoholo”, a video installation created by Gahlord Dewald for this event. A meditation on the distortions of nostalgia and development — and the true grandeur of the lands they obscure — “Holoholo” connects this musical work to ʻāina, in unexpected ways.
