World AIDS Day Memorial Quilt exhibit opens December 1 at State Art Museum

Exhibit opening and memorial Sunday, December 1, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Exhibit open December 2 – 17, 2024 in the ʻEwa Gallery of Capitol Modern (the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum).

Each year, sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt travels to hundreds of communities throughout the United States for in-person displays. For 2024, the Hawaiʻi Health and Harm Reduction Center has partnered with the State Art Museum and the National AIDS Memorial for this exhibit. This will be the first time in over twenty years that the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be shown in Honolulu.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt project is the largest community folk arts project in history and is ongoing. Quilt panels honor, remember, and celebrate the lives of people lost to HIV/AIDS. There are currently about 50,000 panels dedicated to more than 110,000 individuals in the current memorial.
