About the exhibits

“Schaefer Portrait Challenge” is a statewide juried exhibition that has been held triennially at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center since 2003, encouraging Hawai‘i artists to present the people of their island communities through explorations in portraiture. This exhibition features the carefully selected entries of artists whose work best captures Hawai‘i’s extraordinary portrait subjects. The eighth challenge exhibit has traveled from Maui to Capitol Modern: the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. Second floor, ʻEwa Gallery.
“Contemporary Portraiture: Art in Public Places” is a selection of portraits from the Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA). Second floor, ʻEwa Gallery.
The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts is Hawaiʻi’s state government arts agency. SFCA programs include Capitol Modern: the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. Explore the public art collection in the SFCA’s new online database at sfca.hawaii.gov/app-art (link redirects to an Axiell site).
